Travis update #268

Resubmitting the PR against the develop branch, also incorporated Gavin's change requests

@MrCreosote Unless you want to just strip out the release notes that gloss over changes in 2015, I'd like to merge this. I'd like to get the basic travis fixes into place sooner rather than later, and then optimize for performance later on.
