Thanks @aparkin! I'll leave it up and open so others can comment for a day or two...
How much of this is current production vs. nextgen vs. post-nextgen?
This is future vision and y'all have to come up the the staging of it. Not meant to be a real technical plan but a high level ultimate product spec. But I wouldn't mind seeing someone take a stab at time line at some point in the nearish future... and discuss what the impact on other system development might be,
To mint DOIs, OpenMSI got an account with EZID. We haven't used it much yet, but the idea is that you can mint DOIs through their web-service. http://ezid.cdlib.org/home/documentation
Getting the account was pretty quick and easy. It started with an email to Joan.Starr@ucop.edu and jwstoner@lbl.gov.
It came up from a conversation with Ben Leinfelder @ https://knb.ecoinformatics.org/
I'm happy to share more of my limited perspective on minting DOIs if useful.... just let me know.
The Materials Project is getting DOIs for every one of its 60,000 materials through OSTI's "data ID" service
http://www.osti.gov/dataexplorer/didservice
We are doing this a hundred or so IDs at a time, since that's the most they can handle.
There's been some good discussion here, but nothing that leads to significant change in the document itself. @aparkin, @benbowen @dangunter: should we merge this for now as is and see if anyone (you included) wants to propose more substantive changes later on?
The discussions themselves are valuable, obviously, since they are recorded here and can be referred to later.
Fine with me.

OK, pulling the trigger so that discussion can continue later, thanks.
These are thoughts about the purpose and functionality of the emerging social platform. This is VERY initial thoughts and all thoughts welcome as well as thoughts about implementation, scope, or whether we should do this at all.
