Spandrel #804

We have a question regarding curtain wall interpretations for the 2008 standard.

We have a high rise building in san Francisco that has approx. 40% WWR and the
rest is a spandrel system.

Our façade consultant has highlighted excerpts from 2008 standard and based on
those excerpts has an opinion that the curtain wall baseline system should be a
curtain wall, not an opaque wall.

I’ve attached a few images from the 2008 std with façade consultants
interpretations. The fourth image below is from the 2013 standard where the
curtain wall/storefront performance requirements are indicated separately from
an opaque wall system.

What baseline system does CBECC use for a spandrel curtain wall system in the
design?

CBECC-Com, which supports compliance using the performance approach for the
2013 standards, uses a steel-framed wall baseline for all opaque walls. This
applies to spandrel wall sections as well. I can’t speak to how this was
handled in the 2008 code.
