central plant modeling #934

Hello, I am wondering if you can advise me on the correct way to model an
existing central plant that serves multiple building with a new building being
added to the service. I would like to not model the plant with minimum
efficiencies as the existing plant has more efficient equipment than the code
baseline. The Title-24 hotline referred my question to you.

While CBECC does not explicitly handle central plant systems, you can model the
situation you describe. Set the compliance type to ExistingAlteration. Model
your new building as normal, setting all components in the building to
“New.” Include the central plant, modeling it as it exists with full
capacities for all components. All central plant components should have their
status set to “Existing.” Then on the project data screen, for the total
building enter the floor areas of all the buildings served by the central
plant, including the new building. The modeled new building should show up as
the addition floor area.

When the simulation is run, the capacities of the central plant equipment
should be scaled based on the new versus total floor area, with efficiencies
remaining unchanged.
