Ares: Geological Survey / Mars First clarification (status: no action) #8

Mars First from Turmoil has a ruling policy: When you place any tile on mars, receive 1 steel. It's unclear whether this applies to the Geological Survey benefit. Either way, I think there's an inconsistency -- I forget, it was a while ago last I looked at it.

This has turned out to be a tricky decision. The term grant isn't used in the main rulebook, but it appears on Geological Survey:

Effect: When placing a tile grants you any steel, titanium, or heat, you gain one additional of each of those resources that you gain.

So, what grants you steel? Is it just those things which with the word "grant" in them, limited to Ares cards and behavior? Makes me wonder whether Geological Survey should even apply to standard placement bonuses.

The current behavior will include the Mars First steel bonus in Geological Survey, and I have asked for a ruling from the expansion designer, but they haven't been on bgg since June. Almost the entire time I have designed the code around Ares with the notion that grant as it pertains to tile placement means any resources received during the call to addTile.

Of course makes the card more valuable, but players just need to take that into account when calculating their best interests for placing delegates.

So for now, this stands - Geological Survey includes bonuses from a Mars First policy.
