Monday 03/29: Came up with hand sketches of the expecting hardware and UX design. Will follow up with these to create a hardware prototype, and a wireframe sketch. 1) Hardware Sketch The screen will be in the center, with the directional buttons on the left of the radio, and the audio jack on the right of the radio. The LEDs for status will either be on the bottom middle or the right of the radio, depending on how visible we need to make them. The buttons will be arranged in a D-Pad layout, with a center button for additional purposes depending on the state of the radio. The audio jack was placed on the right to allow for easier transportation, in case the user decided to use headphones, instead of speakers. The figure below shows a rough sketch: HW design

For the UX: Home Menu: When the radio starts up, we display three options: Radio, Downloaded Content, and Settings. The display will show a > to indicate the currently selected menu option. Optionally, the selected menu can also blink and output what the selected menu is. We wanted to create a simple menu so it is easy to navigate for both children and their parents, while maintaining limited control over the radio itself. This way, we can shift the control towards the parents. See the figure below for rough outline, and persona thoughts: home menu

Radio Menu: When radio is selected, we show two options: All stations and favorites. Favorites is initially empty, and the user needs to go to all stations and select favorite stations (using the center button). The screen shows two arrows, one going up, and the other going down, on the top/bottom right respectively. This indicates that we can use the up and down buttons to navigate. We also display that we can press the center button to favorite/unfavorite a radio station. See figure below: radio

Downloaded Content (DC) Menu: Similar to the radio menu, when you first select the DC Menu, the user is shown all folders/tracks/playlists depending on the final implementation. Selecting one will resume from the last played file in the folder. User can press the left arrow key to go back to a menu which will list all files in the folder. The center button will act as a pause/play button when pressed once, or a restart button (for the file) when held down for long enough (2-3 s). See file below: downloaded
