update im pretty sure this repo is just a stargrab :/ converted this issue into a discussion

hello

ive been meaning to ask abt the state for this driver for a while now, so i am lol, whats up ? any progress ? eta ? should i look into into other projects, if yes do you know which ?, as i cant find much myself

would b nice to see a commit history of attempts and whatnot to determine the state of the driver :)

thanks for the answers in advance

Yeppp, same here. A temporary fix would be to use a WIFI USB adapter

yh i am, been using it since the start, but im waiting for the development of this, at least a start, but am not seeing any commits even so idk

1337kid commented 8 months ago

lets wait, the devs might be busy with something else... till then, let's hope the WIFI adapter survives xD

ye, im sure this isnt the only 7902 project tho, there should b more popping up, i see tht its rising in popularity and discussion and as this driver seemingly is going nowhere im sure there will b more

StreetXHasu commented 8 months ago

Apparently what I can do is raise the topic and be proactive to show that a driver would be very useful for this device

TruncatedDinoSour commented 8 months ago

Apparently what I can do is raise the topic and be proactive to show that a driver would be very useful for this device

well ofc itd be useful

the usage of this card is growing in popularity, esp in asus vivobooks, which are affordable and w quite ok hw, and people r struggling to get wifi working on these devices tht use this card

and the demand will only continue to grow, even just looking at search results of 'linux driver for mediatek 7902' -- theyre growing

TruncatedDinoSour commented 8 months ago

so far the furthest the development of support for this card has gotten was a letter to the linux mediatek team

but im confused why this driver has been sitting still here for 4 months with zero progress, would b nice to see at least the attempts yk

TruncatedDinoSour commented 8 months ago

god i wish i knew how tf linux drivers worked, ive fucked around in basic drivers but like nothing complex enough for a mediatek driver, i looked at other mediatek drivers and mediatek spec and it looks terrifying lol

TruncatedDinoSour commented 7 months ago

i doubt itll get developed lol

StreetXHasu commented 7 months ago

May the ground be metal. Let's remember my laptop and other devices on Linux with this network card

its fine, im using a usb dongle and i do have some good news, the wl ( broadcom ) driver appearantly makes the card visible, which is good news for future development https://linux-hardware.org/?id=pci:14c3-7902-1a3b-5520&page=2#status -- tried on arch, also works ( https://linux-hardware.org/?probe=41b7a7e0a1 )

:weary: Just got a device with this network card and immediately went to put Linux on it. I hope this gets some more work done!

well the most progress made so far is :

and probably some underground shit i couldnt find, but its growing in popularity and market, so im sure itll get a driver, give it time, the card is still very new

well the most progress made so far is :

  • fuckton of forum posts
  • request submission to mailing list of mediatek maintainers of linux
  • reddit posts lol
  • well at least 1 gh issue, this

Yeah it really sucks. I gave up on Linux for the time being and installed Windows 10 on the default but that crap didn't even have drivers. I'm sure the drivers were only on the OEM install of Windows 11 but I would much rather not use Windows 11. Last night I just purchased a replacement network card for my laptop which actually has Linux drivers. It should be arriving Saturday and I'll just be using that instead of the crappy MediaTek one it came with.

my lappy came w w11, but i never booted it so idk if wifi works, i just installed linux right away, used usb tethering during install and then bought a wifi adapter, TP-LINK TL-WN725N ( https://www.tp-link.com/uk/home-networking/adapter/tl-wn725n/ ), its worse than a wifi card, like much worse, but it works, better than nothing, and i refuse to install windows lol

TruncatedDinoSour commented 7 months ago

so far ive only been able to find a usb driver lol https://github.com/torvalds/linux/blob/master/drivers/net/wireless/mediatek/mt76/mt76x2/usb.c

Yeah I also immediately put Linux on it. I was willing to use Windows 10 at least until drivers came out on Linux but they didn't even work on that.

I just went for a more permanent solution of replacing the network card entirely. Only costed me a couple bucks so hopefully it works well

yeah, the only solution is to wait or to learn how to do linux driver stuff or wait, i wish i knew more abt it, but am too busy w my own stuff and i only have messed around w very simple drivers, but eh, ill wait it out i guess, unless i find time to learn all this stuff

but holy looking at the spec of hw and other mediatek drivers, im scared lmao

Fine. Was just a matter of taking off the bottom, unscrewing the old one and removing it from the slot then putting the new one in its place.

I only tested it a bit as the laptop purchased wasn't for me but a family member. So far they haven't reported any issues so I assume its running fine.

great, thank u, ill let yall know how it goes for me, dpd shows tht it should come today

TruncatedDinoSour commented 5 months ago

replaced wifi card, works great, yall should buy an intel ax200 and just replace it, its not hard + much better than a wifi dongle

https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-1164232-highlight-.html for the record i have also been writing on there

TruncatedDinoSour commented 4 months ago

yeah this repo is 100% a stargab lol, they just created a basic structure for a wanted driver and published it, no commit in 7 months lol

pablodz commented 4 months ago

Really sad. now I understand why Linux hates closed companies

TruncatedDinoSour commented 4 months ago

/shrug

i just replaced my wifi card with an ax210 and im happy w it, and ofc this repo will probably stay a stargrab until they can steal an actual driver that works

pablodz commented 4 months ago

Thanks, I will try
