[Forum] User request: 'Back to top' button in threads. #3

A user has requested a 'back to top' button at the bottom of long threads. Their reasoning:

...is there no way to include a back to top button as the old one had? Now you scroll through the whole thread and arriving at the bottom you have to go way up, or hit the back button on your browser, in which case it will not register as read....

I don't recall one on the "old" site, but it would likely not be too difficult to add one? The matter of 'back button not registering as read' is unavoidable I think.

I have provided these workarounds for now:

Windows/Linux: Press the 'home' key, if you have one.

Mac: cmd(⌘) + up-arrow

Should this be back to the top of the page or back to the first post in the thread? Clicking on the LH ' ... ' button on the page menu has the same effect. Fairly easy to add something to the template if we can establish the precise function required.

Pretty sure it's simple a 'back to top' button, to scroll/jump to top of page. I'm assuming from Dirk's comment that he either doesn't have a scroll wheel, or use shortcuts much. At the moment the only ways to get back to the main forum 'home' or further back up the breadcrumb sit at the top of the page.

I've requested more info, so maybe this is on hold for now (just created an 'on hold' label).

My 2p: If the "you are here" sat at the bottom of the page as well as at the top, that would give users 2 places to get back to where they want to go. This might be part of a bigger navigation issue, so I've asked Dirk what he's trying to achieve by getting to top of page. As it's on the main feedback thread, others might dive in with their incredibly constructive criticism 🙂
