Would imply the collection of mail addresses :-(

Yes, but the following scenarios would be fine anyway:

  1. The initiator of a voting could, if optionally added his/her mail-address, be informed about new votes.
  2. Voters can also optionally add their mail addresses.

In both cases it should not be mandatory.
