I've done this in a different menubar app (not up on GitHub; it cleans utm=
junk from links for me) by switching the icon around for a second or two when it takes an action to show the status. My experience with that suggests that it's really easy to miss this happening (not helped by my using a menubar-cleanup utility, admittedly).
I wonder if the better method might be to go ahead and use notifications for the success/failure steps? It's a lot noisier, but it's also a lot harder to miss.

Notifications would also be fine, IMO. (Especially if there is a preference to disable them for people who don't want them.)
