I'm on a very slow connection at the moment (0.6 Mbps download speed :sob:), so this issue is more dear to me at the moment. I'd really like to have a visual indicator in the menu bar of:

app is "in progress", i.e. making the API calls to get the data for the clipboard
app succeeded in getting the data and the clipboard is ready
app failed to get the data, clipboard is not ready
app didn't attempt to get data (no longer necessary if we do #9)

I've done this in a different menubar app (not up on GitHub; it cleans utm= junk from links for me) by switching the icon around for a second or two when it takes an action to show the status. My experience with that suggests that it's really easy to miss this happening (not helped by my using a menubar-cleanup utility, admittedly).

I wonder if the better method might be to go ahead and use notifications for the success/failure steps? It's a lot noisier, but it's also a lot harder to miss.

Notifications would also be fine, IMO. (Especially if there is a preference to disable them for people who don't want them.)
