The rules for ideal font size change a little bit when holding something in front of your face to read, compared to positioning a monitor. Read this page for calculations. [http://www.journalofvision.org/content/11/5/8.full]

"The fluent range extends over a factor of 10 in angular print size (x-height) from approximately 0.2° to 2°. Assuming a standard reading distance of 40 cm (16 inches), the corresponding physical x-heights are 1.4 mm (4 points) and 14 mm (40 points)."

At 400 mm standard reading distance. 1 degree visual zone = 7 mm x-height

At 1152 pts (16 inches) standard reading distance 1 degree visual zone = 0.27777777777777777777777777777778 in (20 pt) x-height 1.5 degree visual zone = 0.4166666666666667 in (30 pt) x-height
