Greetings everyone!

I just stumbled across your "Side Chatter" in Mozilla's own Firefox (Dekstop) Add-On Repository. Really a great idea and excellent implementation! I bypassed the version check and intalled it on a Fennec fork - which unfortunately (as I expected) didn't work. The problem is possibly - as it is often, as far as I understand - the user interface , respectively the way it's programmed to be operated. Just a small button in the toolbar or a right-click context menu, needed to operate the Add-on and it's totally inoperable with a touch-interface respectively Android.

Would it be possible, and could it be done without too much hassle, to adapt Side Chatter to the Firefox Mobile (Fennec) version!? Your addon is just so good, that it should be running with all Firefox Versions! I wondered which chat protocol you used for it? I probably would have used IRC since it's highly (and easily!) costomizable - client-side as well as server-side.

Its description says, the user'd meet people that "are reading the same article", which confuses me a little ... maybe I misunderstood the way Side Chatter is working? Article? Is it limited to newspages or such? I though for every seperate page of a website, there's a dedicated channel/room. So let|s say you're visiting the website of an art museum: every picture, every statue, generally every piece of art from the museum's expo has it's own subpage and so Side Chatter would show a different channel for each.

I hope you could understand what I mean. And I hope you'll think about building a Fennec Edition of Side Chatter ... since I wasn't successful yet in convincing, tricking, forcing or whatever my Android, to let me install & operate the Desktop Version of Firefox, I lay my hope in your skills, understanding und kindness - let me use this great addon even with Firefox Mobile!

As a little Thank You I could offer, to translate your several addons and programs to German! It'd be my pleasure!

I hope to hear from you quite soon.

Live long and prosper, best regards

Thank you for your interest.

The addon uses the Firefox sidebar, which is only available on Desktop version of Firefox. On mobile, I haven't thought about how the UI would work.

There is a separate chatroom for each URL. However, since there are so many URLs and so many rooms, most rooms will be empty and you will be alone most of the time, at least in the beginning when there are not a lot of users yet. Therefore I implemented a one-of-a-kind hierarchical chatroom structure, so that the room http://example.com/aaa/bbb, until it has a lot of activity in itself, will be able to see chat messages of http://example.com/aaa as well. That's why it behaves kinda strange as you noticed.

I don't have any plan to make this available on mobile at this time. This remains an experiment and has not acquired sufficient traction to warrant further development for now.
