microsoft excel 2003 format from macro export of access not importing correctly has symbols in database #126

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1.export from microsoft access through a Macro to excel
2.creates a excel file format excel 2003
3.use php-excel-reader 

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
normal excel files import fine without issues.  But when I use the export from 
access macro.. I get symbols in the database and only parts of each cell in the 
file.  When I open the .xls file excel it open without any issues.  Is the 
macro created file not supported even though its exported in the excel 2003 
format?
