cleanup deprecated method calls

After porting to kotlin 1.0beta, there are tons of method calls to replace:

• require is deprecated
• javaClass<>() is deprecated
• Map.Entry.getValue() is deprecated
• Map.keySet() is deprecated
• Mutable / immutable lists have a lot of problems
