Saner configure defaults? #51

I hate, for example, the quiet period before builds start

Just my 2 cents but I actually like the quiet period. Quite often I push and then realize I've missed some small tweak so I fix it and re-push. It also helps when you are pushing quickly, something I used todo when I used SVN and everything had to go into a central repo.

However, I agree with reviewing the configure defaults and finding other such defaults
