Recover private key from Android backup #22731

I have moved all my Apps from my old Android phone to a new one. Unfortunately, all Apps worked properly except Keybase.

Keybase App is not logged in, and I don't have any other devices or paper keys. (Why doesn't Keybase tell users to backup their paper key like most Bitcoin wallets?)

I did a system reset on my old phone.

However,

Is it possible to recover my Keybase private key cryptographically?

iirc there's no way to back up the keychain that contained the private keys for your Android device on your account...

I highly doubt you will be able to recover... seeing as your backup wasn't able to recover the private keys when you restored the backup on the new phone.

Keybase should tell users to backup their paper keys when they create new accounts, just like most Bitcoin wallets.

I have just tried creating a new Keybase account on my Android phone. Nothing told me to do that.

I even don't know there is something called a paper key in Keybase until I have to log in again.

When did you first install it? I recently signed up my friend and the Android app tells you to make a paper key as soon as you set up the account.

In the year of 2017.

I tried creating a new Keybase account just now, with the lastest version App. It asked me for my user name, device name, email and phone, then the new account is created. It just suggested me to edit my profile and add some proofs.

Anyway, please force users to write down their paper key and input the key again. Make this as a required step. (Adding a 'skip' button and a warning screen is ok, though)

If you know your password, the only file you need and can't otherwise create is

secretkeys.\<you>.mpack

If you can find that file and are willing to hack around on a desktop, you can recover your account. Likely it didn't make it to your backup though, by design, because we don't want your keys in the cloud.

@junderw @maxtaco I wonder that, if I reset my account now, and later I recover my private key luckily, will my wallet funds come back?

Good day everyone, I’m Stefania Slowik from Poland, my husband and I own Flower and Ornamental plants company, about two months ago we invested some part of our money into a cryptocurrency investment platform and made a total of $274,000 payment through bitcoins to this cryptocurrency platform not aware that it was all a scam, they kept asking us to make more payments into their platform and that was when we realized we have lost our investment.
