I don't have an opinion about this one way or the other (nor do I have a stake), but I'll nonetheless note that there's plenty of precedent for multiple currencies using the same symbol. For example there are US/CAN/AUS/NZ $ (and others), and GBP and (now gone) Italian Lira both use/used the crossed 'L': £. They're distinguished by prefixes if the context is ambiguous.
The Bitcoin symbol was added to the unicode standard in November 2015.

An updated font with the Bitcoin symbol was made by one of the Bitcoin developers: https://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/3refb4/btc_symbol_added_to_droid_and_console_fonts/
It was accepted to be included in a future version. It’s not yet included in the latest version, Unicode 8.0 (code chart for currency symbols). I don’t think we’re going to see much font support (except for users who install alternative fonts themselves) before the next release, so I think it would be premature to use the character now, when most users will just see a box or another error character.
Note, to avoid confusion: I’m not in any way associated with Keybase, just some random guy.
I know there isn’t a unicode symbol for Bitcoin (yet), but re‐using the existing currency symbol for Baht is bad form. To me

(the universal currency symbol) would be a reasonable placeholder, as I assume in future more cryptocoins may be added?eg,
