Confused about public keys #1219

I gave someone the public key from https://keybase.io/sanity/key.asc

They replied with a message encrypted with that public key, but when I try to decrypt it via the site I'm told that I'm not hosting my private key with keybase.

The problem is that I've got no idea which private key corresponds to the public key I gave this person (I've been reinstalling software on some laptops lately).

This is very confusing :/

It all depends on how you generated your key pair. If you used the keybase command line client, then you haven't uploaded your private key to the Keybase website just yet (which is why you get an error), and many would suggest that you don't upload your key for many different reasons.

If you've simply reinstalled all software without backing up your private key, then it could be gone forever (depending on what you've actually done) and you'll have to generate a new one and ask them to re-encrypt the message for you.
