Sorry for letting this sit for so long without a response. Password masking is one of those topics we go back and forth on in the office. On the one hand, security is the whole point of what we're doing. On the other hand, the essential failure of security software since the dawn of time has been that it's cumbersome and confusing and so nobody uses it. Some very respectable people have gone so far as to suggest that we should type passwords in cleartext! That would freak people out in the other direction probably, but anyway our current policy on the whole thing is to not think about it too much right now and to focus on shipping. Is it alright if we come back to this once we have some experience with a larger (and inevitably less technical) userbase?

Passphrase masking on my phone drives me batty. And the worst, the worst is passphrase masking on my phone when entering a wifi password, which I'm usually copying down from a posted sign of much large font size.
