Add JDBC engine #40

Add Engine which uses JDBC, for people who don't want to use hibernate to
talk to the database. This will also hopefully ensure that the API is
sufficiently flexible.

This feature will likely not make it pre-1.0 unless some other developer picks 
it up.
Work has been moved from trunk to a feature branch.
