unicode decoding issue with nginx? #359

I've encountered a strange problem with timthumb when used together with url 
rewriting. Apache works fine, but on nginx (even with unicode-enabled  rewrite) 
it fails...

I guess this might be an nginx/pcre issue, but might also be 'fixable' within 
timthumb so it works with both web servers??
