5 years ago maybe it is a power issue? hdds need some amperage which teres may not be able to provide. what does the system log show?

I have a 1TB harddrive containing music I am attempting to connect to the laptop which does not appear to show it. ls /dev/ shows no changes when I connect it. however it does show up as "Toshiba America Inc Canvio Basics HDD" (the HDD's name) when using the lsusb command. the file system in ExFat, I was wondering if this was a problem with the hard rive or the system?
