Alternative symbols page not working on KitKat

Expected Behaviour

When I press the symbols button & then the “more symbols” or “alternate symbols” button I expect it to go to the actual page. (It does go to the actual page on my phone running marshmallow (6.0)...

Current Behavior

It crashes every single time when I press the “more symbols” button

Steps to Reproduce

Your Environment

Android Version used: 4.4.2
Phone/tablet name and model: AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note Pro (SM-P907A)
Language and keyboard layout: English, Spanish & German - full layout on all three languages

I got a Google Pixel C tab yesterday to replace my old Samsung Galaxy Note Pro, and it's having the same issue. I get an error "kii keyboard has stopped..." Whenever trying to access the second symbols page on my pixel c as well. It's running android 7.1.1 with the same languages as my old Samsung Galaxy note pro.
