Layer API #869

I'm developing a collaborative SVG whiteboard using svg-edit.
Each user has her own layer she can edit and changes to her layer are 
propagated to the other users. 
An API to (efficiently) [de]serialize layers would be appreciated

It is developed using couchdb: the collaboration layer is very thiny. Even if I 
try to take it secret would be simple enough cloning it.

I think the more generic 947 being the best place to talk about this.
