Poor map viewer responsiveness #67

While I haven't used the map viewer in awhile, I remember that with map sizes as large as we currently use, responsiveness of scrolling and changing the zoom level was fairly poor. We should address this somehow. Could using object pools somehow help?

I strongly suspect that sorting and filtering fixtures is a large part of the problem; can we cache results of that somehow?
