When device sleeps, wifi connection is dropped #1

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Set auto-lock through Settings > General > Auto-lock
2. Launch app and setup, wait specified time in Auto-lock
3. When the device auto-locks it sleeps, which appears to disable Wifi.  This 
in turn breaks the 
connection between the device and laptop
