4k120hz issue #19

Hello, I recently replaced a 4k120 Hz screen. I'm having a refresh rate issue. I can overclock to 75 Hz under windows, but his. The bit depth has been changed from 10 bits to 8 bits. I'm wondering if this graphics card has limited bandwidth and can't support high resolution and high refresh rate? At the same time, only 4k60 Hz is supported under Mac OS. I have read your document about repair, but I don’t understand it very well. It does not mention a situation under Windows. Are there any detailed steps on how to increase this refresh rate to 120 Hz? Thank you so much. At the same time, I also noticed that Broadcom network card has been solved by someone on Xianyu, and the WiFi problem under the 14 system. Although I don’t know if it is true or not, I read the other party’s description and said that it can solve the problem of Broadcom network card under Mac OS14 system. Hi @qinjingliuan, Are you using macOS Ventura or Sonoma? I'm using Ventura and also recently managed to upgrade my internal display from the stock to a B173ZAN06.C which is a MiniLED 4K-144HZ display. Hilariously enough I can get it up to 4K-144HZ in Windows and Ubuntu but can only get it up to 4K-120HZ in Ventura. (Hoping that this is just due to broken DSC support in Ventura.)

Anyways, @kingo132 pretty much laid out how to increase the refresh rate in Windows. Essentially you're modifying your original EDID data with a specialized tool within Windows called CRU. It's similar to SwitchResX, and you can export the newly modified EDID afterwards. Afterwards, what I did is took the modified EDID and made a codeless kext with it for macOS. I see now that you've mentioned it that Windows says my bit depth is 6-bits when increasing the refresh rate to 144HZ. Might explain why the colors look way better in macOS than in Windows and Ubuntu. (How do I check the internal display's bit depth within macOS?)

To make this codeless kext within macOS, you use a utility called Hackintool:

To edit the codeless kext with your modified EDID data:

To add the codeless kext to your configuration and get 4K-120HZ:

            <dict>
                <key>Arch</key>
                <string>Any</string>
                <key>BundlePath</key>
                <string>Display-xxx-xxxx.kext</string>
                <key>Comment</key>
                <string></string>
                <key>Enabled</key>
                <true/>
                <key>ExecutablePath</key>
                <string></string>
                <key>MaxKernel</key>
                <string></string>
                <key>MinKernel</key>
                <string></string>

By the way, I'm curious if you or someone else here has dealt with any sort of startup delay problem while booting into macOS? I've been dealing with this since macOS Monterey, and it doesn't happen for me every time I startup the OS. It's accompanied by a screeching sound through the speakers and can delay the boot process anywhere between 2-30 minutes.

I haven't really brought it up here before as an issue because I have a slightly different EFI/config to what's in this repo, and I've yet to see if it's potentially just because of something within my configuration specifically being the problem. I've tried switching my internal SSDs from Samsung to WD, and temporarily switching my WiFi card from a Fenvi BCM94352Z to a Broadcom BCM943602CS. I'm hoping that I'm just an idiot, and that it's a very simple fix to my configuration because I'm getting quite lonely troubleshooting this by myself.

Regarding the WiFi, I've yet to try out macOS Sonoma myself... Maybe someone else here has tried the solution and knows if it's fixed?

Regarding the issue of resolution and overclocking, I am not very confused now. Because I can't feel the difference between 60 Hz and 144, mainly because I don't usually play games. Currently I use 60 Hz. The overclocking method you provided may be useful under Mac OS. But the highest I have under Windows is 75. Therefore, the improvement ability is also very limited. Of course, it would be best if it could be raised to 144. I guess it may be caused by the incompatibility between the graphics card and this screen, and the refresh rate cannot be increased.

My version of the guide may be a little different from yours. I will share my guide with you. I have turned off the three codes inside, including the WiFi and Bluetooth drivers. I have no startup related issues so far. The systems I currently use are mainly 12 and 14. I have not used the 13 system. So I’m not very clear about the 13 system. The hard drive I am currently using is an old hard drive sn750 that has wide compatibility. I bought two pieces. One is 1t, and the other is 2t. This hard drive performs very well under Black Apple. I have used it for about two years without any hard drive related problems. Samsung's hard drive is currently not very compatible with black iPhones. I have used 970Pro and EVO before, and there were some problems. I suggest you replace it with a Western Digital hard drive.

I don't have this screeching sound during the bootup, but this a51m r2 laptop hackintosh does take longer to boot than other Hackintosh, approximately 1 minute longer I felt.
