This is not ready for review but I need feedback from Travis :)

Tempted to get this landed and keep #3 open for the remaining cases since:

it's still a win test-wise
the future is so uncertain I'm not comfortable keeping things in the air for a long time

Looks like all good improvements. Not being fussy about landing as it's uncertain where this particular app is headed :) In summary I'd like a high level JSDoc over each method to help me follow code :)
