A user sent this screenshot asking that labels be translated to Chinese as much as the zim titles already are, but where/how would we do it? Is it in the zimfarm recipe or somewhere else?

"Kiwix" is the publisher and can not and should not be translated.

"Wikipedia" comes from the tag I guess and might be translated. Someone to give more insight how this works?

It seems this is a smartphone screenshot (ios or android, I don't know)

We already discussed this in live at last hackathon but allow me to explain it here :

We are using tags here (https://www.openzim.org/wiki/Tags) Technically, they are free tags and so, we cannot (as reader) put any semantic on them (but filter/selection based on there presence or not).

If I agree we must have free tag to allow creator/user to put whatever they want. I disliked the fact that we cannot do something with them. During our discussion, I win the fact we add the "Private Tags" to have some semantic values to use (You win the fact it is not in the spec)

Should we translate private tags ?

Yes, and more globally, we must display them "the best way".

This is the case in kiwix-desktop where we display the (translated) "Videos", "Pictures", "Introduction only" or "Fulltext index" texts (The translation is part of the kiwix-desktop translation files). This is also the case in this screenshot where you can see the "circled" Pic, Short Text or Text only. They are not translated, but it should be done at the application level, the English texts come from there (Should they be translated to the application or zim language is a question I left for the corresponding issue)

We also use the _category:foo private tag to regroup the zim files by category in kiwix-desktop. And these categories (on the left of the content manager) are "translated". [Technically they are not translated. We have a list of known and fixed categories we want to handle. We are translating this list and regroup the zim in those categories]

At the end of the process, we (kiwix-desktop) never use the (real) free tags. We don't even display them. (We maybe should but it is another question)

Should we translate (real) free tags ?

Short answer : No.

Long answer : They are free tags and we cannot do anything we them but to display them. How in first instance you know that wikipedia is a category ? Should we translate wikipedia to 维基百科 (simplified Chinese), 維基百科 (traditional Chinese) or Wéijī Bǎikē (pinyin) ?

What happens to Wikipedia or WIKIPEDIA ? What happens if the creator put the English wikipedia and also 维基百科 ?

This is free tags, for the best and the worth :slightly_smiling_face:
