In medroidvanias (meh) there are often problems like a lot of extra unnecessary backtracking. And often the ways to minimize them are somewhat strange and atmosphere-breaking, like teleporters etc.
I'd say there need to be things like breakable from one side walls, rope ladders, just ropes, stairs created from some other scenery etc, so it all would be a part of the game world and not some abstract just-for-backtracking thing.
Such things could also be an actual pointer to the secret or whatsonot.
