What exactly does the USBSerial Example code do? #9

I run it, and when i plug in my ardruino it pops up and says;
Serial device: com.hoho.android.usbserial.driver.CdcAcmSerialDriver@427dbbf8

and that is it? i cant act see if any thing is connected or if the serial port 
has been opened?

can i send it a message from the other ends terminal? 

Please advise?
