me: Quick question -- about the "where am I" feature?
I've been thinking about status in general
and I've figured out how to get percent-completed graphs displaying
I was wondering where to display it?
Perian: hmmm....
me: I could put it on teh collection page, next to each work
or make a separate project statistics page for the collection
showing status of each work
and maybe stats on each transcriber -- a top-ten list or something?
Perian: THAT last would be particularly cool
me: oh?
cool!
have you seen the Ancestry.com WorldArchives Project project pages?
Perian: yeah - drives people to do more. Game theory
me: I've been corresponding a lot lately with a doctoral student in the UK who's researching volunteer participation for cultural institutions
so that's kind of on my mind
lemme get a link for you
Perian: um, as to the original question, having a status completed associated with each work, yes. But maybe some sort of overall visualization dashboard with stats?
and no, I haven't seen the Ancestry.com pages
Perian: cause if people can see at a glance what all needs to be completed, and there's one at 99%, they might be able to have a badge showing they've completed X number of journals.
me: Okay, I think I'd be most comforatable with a project statistics screen that dumps just about everything.
Then we can figure out where and whether to incorporate the individual bits
(I'm no good at this information architecture stuff)
Perian: yeah. that's a fair amount of data to pull together
but is there a way to record more than just stats? Directing the user to the next untranscribed page?
me: that's the other bit that's important
right now, if you log in to the site, the contents page does that -- sort of
in that it shows a status beside each page
I'd really like to figure out a good flow for directing the user to the next action
lemme think on that a bit more
there are some more bug fixes and quick features to deal with while we chew on that
I'm going to cut and paste this chat into a new issue on a project stats screen
I've written a collection-specific stats screen. We could very easily expand this to a site-wide screen, or expose parts of it on the dashboard or collection screen.

me: It takes forever to load, but check out the project statistics panel in the lower right hand side here: http://www.ancestry.com/wiki/index.php?title=World_Archives_Project:_London%2c_England%2c_School_Admissions_and_Discharges%2c_1841-1911 (actually, just click the link and come back -- it can take minutes!)
