Fail to specify max_line_length via pyproject.toml

I'm using version 8.4.1 and have copied the configuration from the documentation to pyproject.toml:

> cat pyproject.toml
[tool.pylama.linter.pycodestyle]
max_line_length = 120

[tool.pylama.linter.pylint]
max_line_length = 120

I do not have another config file e.g. pylama.ini But when I call pylama it still has a max_line_length of 100 and not 120:

> pylama -v foo

Only if I call it like this it gets set to 120:

> pylama -v --max-line-length=120 foo

Where am I going wrong?

It doesn't work via pre-commit, but works directly.
