I downloaded several different models of passenger buses and tried to change existing lines to use them.
If you start using a new prefix for the first time, you can set the vehicle model and give that prefix to an existing line, and the existing line will use the new vehicle model when adding vehicles.
If you take an existing line and simply change the vehicle model, the new model will never be added, even if you delete all vehicles of that line from the map, even if you reduce the budget to 0% and all vehicles are automatically removed from the map. When vehicles are budgeted again, they will be the original model, and not the newly selected model.
It would be very convenient to simple change the model type and have vehicle already running the route be replace automatically, one after the other, until all are replaced.
EG: Change models on line details page for the targeted line.
One vehicle of the new model is spawned from its depot if applicable, and inserted into the line.
Once the new vehicle has taken up service, the very next vehicle of the old model to reach the first stop (could also be the stop closest to the depot, if applicable)
[ ] debarks all passengers
[ ] does not embark new passengers
[ ] returns to depot, if applicable, or is otherwise simply respawned
If there are still old models running on the line, redo from start.
If that is too much work, another more manual possibility would be to change the model, and have all new vehicles on the line be only of the new model, The one could for example, give an line with 4 busses:
Add an additional 4 busses (budget) to the line, which would be only of the new model.
At the discretion of the player, he/she may reduce the number of busses (budget), and the if there are vehicles not consistent with the current model type, the appropriate number of vehicles will be retired per the normal game mechanisms.
Only when all vehicles on the line are of the current model, can any of the current model be eliminated through budgetary means.
On a side request, it would be awesome if the budget slider could be fine-adjusted with the mouse wheel.
