text clipping when OpenGL depth test enabled #273

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. run the following example code on Mac OS 10.5.2
2. notice that there's strange clipping between some adjacent glyphs (WV, for 
example)

The problem is different depending on the exact font and font size, but never 
seems to go away 
completely.  This code is a condensed snippet; the problem happens in more 
"normal" OpenGL 
programs as well (for instance, turning blending on or changing the Z-buffer 
range doesn't make 
any difference).

Yes, the adjacent glyphs are colliding in the depth buffer.

You need to either turn off depth-testing completely during text rendering or 
temporarily alter the depth testing function to GL_LEQUAL, GL_EQUAL or 
GL_ALWAYS.

You can still composite text in a 3D scene by leaving depth testing enabled but 
disabling depth writes while 
drawing text.
