cannot read superscript,subscript and other special characters like root sign #160

i have made a script were in i upload my xls file and displat it's content in 
grid form...here i have came across an issue where am unable to display 
superscript,subscript and other special characters like root sign etc.. on my 
webpage. It instead shows '???' in place of the characters
