It's hard to know when a file is saved or not #2

Best solution is to add vim powerbar plugin, everything is more noticeable

+1 for powerline.

For the fancy symbols use the following vim config line: let g:Powerline_symbols='fancy' and install one of the patched fonts. (check my dotfiles for a way to install the fonts by script for os x).
