Currently we have a fairly short timeout for connection to the wifi AP. On the first connection attempt we time out fairly reliably; then things work better on the second or third attempt. It might be better simply to wait longer for the connection to be established. What I have now is completely ad-hoc, maybe there are guidelines out there...
