Uses json when simplejson isn't available.

This still isn't fixed.

Also, can you please stop squashing all the commits into one? that makes it hard to see what changed.

also, the pull request is now not coupled to the master, because the squashing. This means it is impossible to merge my changes to the current master.

I will make a new pull request. please just merge that...
