After speaking with @SyedGhazanferAnwar I learned that for the purposes of development and testing, we can set the space much lower than 1MB (30-50KB). Reducing the default space to 0.1MB would take the rent exemption down from 69 KOII to 6.9, which is much more reasonable for developers who are experimenting, and much easier for us to fund during hackathons.
In addition, we need to add clear instructions that when deploying a task to production, the space should be at least 1MB, and explain why this is important.
