We need a more permissive/comprehensive version parser

our current version parsing/comparison library is pretty strict and doesn't fully account for the version formats we could come across. We should probably write our own so that we can better handle all the different formats languages/libraries can throw at us

Moving this to low priority as this is needed very much so for the future, but is not going to generally increase our coverage with the current need to deliver the integration AFAIK. If this is incorrect please let me know.
