What device(s) are you experiencing the problem on?
Samsung Galaxy Nexus

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Turn off WiFi (or just go out of Wifi reach)
2. Try to run "hello_world.py" (either background of foreground)

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?

Expecting the script to run. Instead, SL4A crashes with the message
"Unfortunately, SL4A has stopped".

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
SL4A R6 + Python for Android r1 (bur also tried later version of python for
android) on Stock Android 4.1.1

Please provide any additional information below.

When wifi is on and connected, everything works well.

a simple fix is to add this line to your hosts file: 127.0.0.1 localhost
alt least that fixed it on cyanogenmod 7
here is a tutorial how to do that on a rooted device

The line "127.0.0.1 localhost" was already present in my hosts file.

A post on
https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgroups#!topic/android-scripting/akC4a_mDldU
is suggesting the hosts file entry "127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost".

However, that didn't solve the issue on my device either.
(Samsung Galaxy W with stock Android 2.3.6)
