I'm having my 15 year old HVAC replaced next week. Would like to help out where I can. End goal is being able to control my system locally within my custom home automation system. The system is dual zone with two XL1050's and a zone panel.

What do I need to interface with the system? Do you have docs that show what need to be done electrically? Is it similar to the Comfort Zone II thing that has an MQTT project? Do I need one of those RS485 to network adapters? Ideally I would like to use a Raspberry Pi Zero W with a "RS485 CAN HAT" so I can wrap the protocol into a CRUD service for my home auto system to interface with. But I don't mind getting one of those adapters if prototyping is easier to start with.

Hi, awesome to hear! Yeah, look at wiki page here for a picture of a setup. You will need some sort of RS485 to UART device at least. If you have communicating furnace and thermostat, you can at least monitor and log communication. Lots of keywords in this repo to help you in search for online pdfs on full specs.
