Bulbs reverting custom names in Home app upon HOOBS reboot

First I will say, all the bulbs are found & work fine. I do however have an issue upon rebooting HOOBS where the names & icons I have added in Apple Home app are lost & the tiles in Home app revert to the alphanumeric name the bulbs begins with as default. Even when I name in them with custom names in HOOBS. I have checked initially with HOOBS support & they believe this is a cache handling issue relative to the plugin.

I am running into the same issue also that the names aren't sticking which is annoying to search in the home app.

Same here HB 1.3 and current HBWL. I am using the HB image not HOOBS.

Does the latest v3 update fix your issues?

As an FYI, I am just in the ticket loop, but after installing the update, HOOBS would not start up, I had to revert to a previous backup.

I did not capture any logging at the time, but if need be, I can reinstall, try again & if so, grab the logging…

Anyone else have that issue post update?

The plugin totally messes up HOOBS. For me, only a power cycle would restart Hoobs and even then services would not start until I log into the web interface. But upon selecting any menus item the services would stop. I re flashed my SD card and set everything up from scratch and still the same problem. Finally gave up and migrated to the latest Homebridge image and now the everything works, except that when any bulb is offline. I get the message that the plugin slows down Homebridge.

Interesting, other than doing a full rebuild (which I did recently for another purpose), that is pretty much exactly what I had encountered as well, tho I never got anything working in the WEB interface, the services would try to start & then fail out & revert to a stopped state.

I had been avoiding, as I have a few other plugins all working flawlessly, taking down HOOBS & migrating to HomeBridge. I know you can backup / restore & overall preserve your efforts for all items added in HOOBS, but I rebuild a lot of devices it seems having so many smart home devices now, & was hoping to avoid that one 😜.

So, I did UD HOOBS today (3.3.3.) & the plugin (3.0.1). They are operating together now, & the lights are working, HomeKit does see adaptive lighting for them, which is nice.

I am getting a lot of log chatter that I wanted to copy & paste up to this message chain. This is just a chunk of the log, as thee entires mostly loop & repeat…. Has a lot of references to callbacks.

@randymassey to confirm, the plugin is functioning (not crashing) on the latest version of hoobs? That's good to hear :)

As for the slow response, it is only saying that because either A) The bulbs are not responding or B) are taking a very long time to respond. Are these bulbs powered and connected to the network?

Hi Kevin, yes I can confirm at present under the updated version of HOOBS 3.3.3 & the 3.0.1 version of your plug-in, everything is up and running correctly. Lights respond to Siri on HomePod or in the Home app on iOS/macOS. Adaptive lighting did activate for the qty (4) WizLAN bulbs I have (I REALLLY wish LIFX would get moving on that Lololol).

There was a little funkiness in doing the upgrade between the two versions (HOOBS & plugin), it actually required a hard reboot of the raspberry pi I have it installed on. I did do the HOOBS update first and then the plug-in update. Just following logical order of events, server first, plug-in next, eg..

This was a recently rebuilt from scratch version of HOOBS, so I’m not clear if it was a post update glitch for HOOBS or an issue between HOOBS and the plug-in. I did upgrade HOOBS first and also did do a “REBOOT” of HOOBS first, then I moved from the 2.2.x plug-in for WizLAN to the 3.0.1 today.

Initially there were still weird issues at that point with HOOBS still not behaving correctly, WEB UI not responding, new UI window sessions not being honored, So to confirm that is still with the previous version of the plug-in running and no plug-in update as yet in the sequence of steps I did. Reboot commands sent to the server we’re not actually rebooting the server. Which I would say is unusual, I’ve really never had that happen before in HOOBS with a HOOBS UD, so I finally did a power cycle/hard reboot of the raspberry PI at that point, & when everything came back up after that all issues did seem to be resolved, I did do a subsequent secondary restart, well reboot to be clear, of the raspberry PI, and everything has been operating since.

To your question; The bulbs are actively on the network, with power, they are only turned off by issuing the off command through the home app for the actual LED diode‘s. So the socket is providing power to the bulbs in other words as confirmation. I am running all Apple Airport Extreme’s 6th generation base towers (3 current firmware 7.9.1), in a WDS configuration to expand coverage throughout my house. (in fairness to clarity of detail, I do run an older Airport Express in the garage that is an 802.11n 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz also in the WDS configuration for signal into the garage for some 2.4 devices in there, its firmware Is current @ 7.8.1, top of brain I do not recall it’s exact generation model, but it is the small flat square one that looks similar to an Apple TV that Apple still supports with airplay, & the bulbs do not connect to it as it’s too far away).

I do have very high internal throughput and broad coverage throughout my house, and there is a WDS AirPort Extreme 6th Gen .ac unit near the bulbs.

I also do use third-party tools like NetSpot on the Macintosh, and pay attention to network channels and I know my MacBook pros on the internal Wi-Fi LAN can achieve (when you hold the option key down on the Wi-Fi menu bar icon and you see the additional hidden data, the TX / transmit rate is between 800 Mb per second to 1300 Mb per second which is the theoretical maximum the technology can achieve).

I do run all CAT 7 braided & shielded ethernet cables, on a High speed COAX to fiber cable connection through Spectrum. (I realize this is all internal LAN activity and nothing to do with Internet speeds I’m just giving you a rough idea of my LAN build out). LAN latency really is not an issue internally for me.

My background is actually in networking / IT at the corporate level, so this is something I take pretty seriously in my home. I do also use switches not hubs for my ethernet expansion etc. (but those devices are for computers and printers that hang off the main base station and have nothing to do with the internal wireless LAN network either).

I know those things will not directly relate, but I did want to give you some quick backfill to understand the environment that the bulbs are operating in.

I would also say since I do pay attention to the logs I’ve never seen those errors before until today, post these updates, so perhaps there’s more granular logging That’s Taking Pl., I’m not sure precisely what was changed in each of the respective updates.

I’ll wrap it up here, but I can confirm outside of the additional log chatter that, and this is only in the first couple of hours of testing post doing these updates this morning, so I do need a day or two to bear out actual testing; but as to present post that hard reboot and initial update glitch which I still do not have and understanding as to the cause of, everything seems it is operating as it should.

Since the log chatter was different than what I’ve seen historically I figured I’d send it back up the chain.

I guess I spoke too soon, not long after I composed that detailed message, they went offline.

By tha I mean, HOOBS is running, but the WizLAN bulbs show as offline now. I have power cycled them too & reboot my entire network, no changes..

I had to stop & go for a quick espresso run, but this is what is in the logs now..

I shod add as a detail, the bulbs are running current firmware & I am running the current WizLAN app (bulbs are @ v1.21.2 FW).

They do respond in the WizLAN app…

I have not as yet stope dit back to the older plugin or tested beyond the power cycling the bulbs & rebooting all of my Wifi & modem’s etc…

I should note too, tho I am not sure as yet if related, I am running 3 other plugins, the BOND, MyQ & MySmartBlinds. It does seem this morning, since doing these updates, the tiles in the Apple Home app for HOOBS are updating more slowly, eg taking longer to update / refresh their state.. I will try first removing & then reinstalling the plugin & test further in just a bit, but I think it took longer to compose that last email, than they ran successfully for. HOOBS became unresponsive again & I had to force power cycle it, now everything else on HOOBS & HOOBS itself is running, but the bulbs show as offline & HOOBS is strangely sluggish..

Hi Kev…

So, a quick 411 post uninstall / reinstall of the WizLAN plugin.

Interestingly, uninstalling it, HOOBS immediately became responsive in the Home app, so the lag seems to be related.

I did then delete & reinstall the plugin, however, post that point, when trying to reboot HOOBS itself it would not honor a reboot command, so I did a hard power off..

Now, at that point it came back up & I did then search for & reinstall the plugin, & add back in the default configuration (as usually that is there, but came up blank this time), but & time will bear this out, for the moment, they are working & HOOBS is not “lagging” like it was.

So, it seems vs just updating the plugin (assuming this holds), that I had to delete & reinstall it to get thing working again.

Now, I have not tried successive reboots of HOOBS itself to see if it’s sticking still or not, so that could be resolve in the above steps, or still lingering, time will tell, but the logs looks better to me. It seems to be identifying the bulbs correctly now, & the superfluous data in the logs about delays (at least so far) is not there.

I’m successfully running about 20 mins now under this scenario..

I wont keep peppering update emails, but I sent this one as those steps for the moment do seem to have resolved the lag from other HOOBS items in the Apple Home App, & maybe the rebooting issue, I’m going to take a break for a bit now since things are operating, & I don’t want to temp date too much LOL…

Hi Kevin…

So, I wanted to give you a quick follow up post today 3.0.1 UD…

I still seem to be having an issue when this plugin is installed “rebooting” HOOBS, it basically will not reboot.

However, what I can say, that I am noticing immediately (mind you I only just installed it a few mins ago), is that now it is no longer causing lag delay in the other HOOBS items updating in Apple Home. So, for instance with the WizLAN plugin active, the MyQ garage door status would take almost a minute in Apple Home to actually UD it’s status, it would have that & most all of the other HOOBS HomeKit items stuck in “updating” status for a very long time.

Now, since the UD this morning, everything in Home from HOOBS is updating it’s status instantly. I am also (at least 5 mins in so far) not seeing the not responding messages from the bulbs, but that was varying since our last emails, sometimes it was working & sometimes not.

My log just looks really clean right now, which is not something I have seen since the HOOBS 333 UD & the 300 WizLAN UD’s went in.

I will re-test again pulling it out & seeing if the reboot issue resolves as it did when I tested initially (at least that is my recollection that when disabling WizLAN HOOBS could reboot ok in my test a week or so ago, but let me re-confirm that its tied to this plugin still now).

However, the other issues, at least so far, seem MUCH better in just the first few mins, I can immediately tell a difference.

As a quick update. I finally migrated out of HOOBS, and moved into a full home bridge install. This seems to, at least so far, I have resolved all of my issues.

I would see in the logs for HOOBS, of the four plug-ins that I used, several of them would complain about dependencies being out of date etc.

I also just had a number of random odd behavior things where icons no matter what you named them would re-position or rename himself like we've had here, usually when rebooting HOOBS,but yet so far under the full home bridge install I haven't had a single issue.

Also the logs look really clean, I'm not seeing complaining in the logs. So I hate to say it, but this seems more related to HOOBS perhaps than anything else, from what I can tell having worked with both for quite a while now. Perhaps too many of the critical dependencies are out of date and that creates an inherent underlying problem? Not sure.

I did do the testing that I was indicating I would do BTW, end it really was a nightmare scenario moving into that last version of HOOBS, and updating this plug-in. It did seem that the last plug-in under HOOBS does cause a Home app delay for all HOOBS items no matter the plug-in, but when in removed WizLAN, HOOBS would work responsively again.

Unfortunately, or perhaps more fortunately for you, I won't be doing any more HOOBS testing, LOL
