Why so large a share of articles from 2016 are missing DOI?

Mike: Can you send me the 2016 list as a .csv or tsv if possible and I can take a quick look and come up with an answer? Interesting find, but clean up needed if this figure is used, or people will "flag 2016 bar" as our poor work! : )

I see a pattern, e.g. these articles from biomedcentral are missing DOI in PubMed retrieved data:

different journals, the same publisher

Closing as attributable to an upstream issue with BioMedCentral (and we did use the DOIs as primary keys, just as a fallback).
