Lower case i and j dots misplaced in News Cycle font #131

GoogleCodeExporter commented 8 years ago
The dots on the lower case i and j in the News Cycle font appear to the left of
the vertical instead of above. The font had been fine before (I've been using
it for over a month on a live site).

The problem was first raised in Issue 127
http://code.google.com/p/googlefontdirectory/issues/detail?id=127 but since
that issue was already closed I am starting a new one.

--What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
I'm using a Mac (OS X 10.6.8), I see the problem on Chrome 18.0.1025.162,
Safari 5.1.5 and Firefox 11.0. Have flushed caches and restarted. Fonts on iOS
appear correct, at least. I re-generated the code for the font the Google web
fonts "use" page and that still didn't fix the problem.

See attached screenshot from http://allegoriesandexperiences.com/
Font is also used on http://gagliostro.com and the problem is there as well
On the first sites I've selected only the normal version of the font via the
Google page; on the second site (a Drupal site which is accessing the webfont
via a module) it's automatically calling both the normal and bold versions.

I gather from the comments from Issue 127 that this problem is only on some
Macs. Maybe it's a subset issue following the fix from April 9?

Thanks very much, I hope this can be fixed because this is a beautiful font and
I don't want to stop using it!

Wonder if this is a Snow Leopard (mac 10.6) issue. Font is rendering fine on my
Macs running 10.5.8 and 10.7.3 on Safari, Chrome, Firefox, but I'm seeing the
same i/j problem on my mac with 10.6.3. Really don't want to stop using this
font, so hoping it can be fixed soon.

Hello moderators? Is anybody reading this forum? Can this font be fixed or
should we look elsewhere?

Contacted the News Cycle designer through launchpad. Reported as a related bug
here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/newscycle/+bug/843725?comments=all

Previously I reported "bug" based on the #127 mash-up issue, but he was pretty
sure it was a Google problem in that case. Since there was earlier dot i/j
issue with font, perhaps he'll take an interest.

Also seeing that a certain pt. size, the dot now is simply missing, rather than
misplaced. Most recent screen capture attached.

Thanks for following that angle. I think there's an additional (or perhaps)
related issue with how the two font styles (400 normal and 700 bold) are saved
at least on Google. When I try to enable News Cycle via the Drupal module, it
only shows the one News Cycle selection box which activates both styles;
whereas all the other Google fonts with multiple styles are able to be
individually selected--which leads me to suspect that there's still a problem
how the subsets are saved on the Google font version (and maybe an additional
problem with hinting too). I'm going to switch to Font Squirrel to see if that
works.

Could you report back on how Font Squirrel goes? I'm using a themetrust wp
template that calls for Google fonts. Would have to ask my designer to
investigate a way to get the font through different resource. (Don't want to
replace with another Google sans serif fonts.) Thanks.

Just went to check my sites before starting to switch to Font Squirrel -- the
Google version of News Cycles seems to be working fine now. Your site looks
correct now too. Would have been nice if somebody had actually noted that in
this forum.... Thanks again for posting on launchpad, I'm assuming that's what
fast-tracked the fix.

Looks like they actually noted the fix (and reason for the problem) in the
previous post 127.
I only learned about it because I was on email notification for that issue too.
Here's the link:
http://code.google.com/p/googlefontdirectory/issues/detail?id=127

Had to clear cache, but glad to see it's working now.
