HKT-4100 emulation [Feature Request] #235

Open GoogleCodeExporter opened 9 years ago

I think NullDC must have this feature. You have to add support for HKT-4100
memory card. If you don't know what is this, i'll explain. It is official
memory card from Sega. It doesn't have screen and buttons. But it has 4x more
memory. 800 blocks instead of 200. There are some games
incompatible with this card. I think you should add plugin for this.

This would be nice. While we can use up to 8 VMUs for more space, lots of games
only allow saving to VMU A1 so more space there would be useful.

Yes, this was what i'm talking about. It is very useful. Data storage of
original VMU is not big enough. Only 200 blocks. Saves for some games can take
even 90 blocks. Another issue is DLC (Downloadable content). I mean official
addons for games from their creators -
http://dreamcast.onlineconsoles.com/phpBB2/downloads_officialcontent.php

I didn't tested them all, but i tested some of them. According to test, DLC for
some games works (Skies of Arcadia i mean). But they take many blocks in memory
card. Support for HKT-4100 would be a good decision. If you have only VMU,
you'll replace them very often. If you have HKT-4100 support, you won't have
problems with free space.

I can try to add that, but i fear of the problems with compat.
Wouldn't a per-game VMU option be better ?

Per-game VMU option would be great imo. Also, that way you still get the
screen.

Played a bit with VMUs today, it seems that many many games don't support
anything more than the typical vmu size. Maby its bug on my code though. Bios
formatted up to 1669 blocks !

It may be a bug, I've got one of these 800-block official VMUs and they work
with almost every game. I think only a handful don't work (tried to Google
which ones but couldn't find much). It also shows as 800 full blocks, rather
than the 3rd party cards which were 4 pages of 200 blocks (with a button on the
VMU to cycle pages).

I have the list of incompatible games and compatible games, which have some
troubles with hkt-4100. Well, there are ~30 games. Dreamcast has at least ~700
games. You can find the list in Russian wikipedia:

ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/VMU

See the last section named "Проблемы с совместимостью"
But i am not sure if this list is complete.

There is no reason to support those cards. They still are 200 blocks and you'd
still have to switch (bank instead of vmu, but the principal is the same).

In sort, it does not solve any problems but creates more (some stuff are not
compatible with those).

You're right, you do still have to switch banks on the 800-block Sega card. Not
sure what I was thinking/smoking earlier...

So we probably don't want this feature.

But, automatic per-game switching may be good
