changes for python3 compatibility. Also followed some suggest by 2to3 to... #3

...ol. Some chnges in setup may have broken darwin compilability. This should be checked before to merge

Heyhey,

sorry for my long silence. I more or less revamped the code in the last days. The current master now works on 2.6, 2.7, 3.3, and 3.4 and some other issues have also been fixed. I'll push a new version to pypi hopefully next week or so.
