This, in my opinion, ties in to being secure in oneself and strong mentally. Societal pressure is unavoidable and is certain to follow us through our lives. It is rather our reaction to it that dictates if we will be able to deal with it just fine or succumb to it. As abstract or woo-woo as it may sound, I strongly believe taking a step back and noticing our own reaction to events/people/society is a way to understand our own self and fears better. Respond, don't react.
