Propose transitioning KServe project from LFAI to CNCF

KServe is a community driven open source project, aiming to deliver a cloud-native, scalable, extensible serverless ML inference platform. It provides an open standard control and data plane for serving production ML models including Scikit-learn, Tensorflow, PyTorch and large language models(LLMs).

Since its inception in 2019, previously known as KFServing under Kubeflow, the KServe project has gained significant traction with support from leading industry players such as Bloomberg, IBM, RedHat, Intuit, SAP, AliCloud. It has fostered a diverse and inclusive community including both end users and cloud vendors. Embracing an open governance model, KServe has established a clear process for promoting reviewers and approvers, ensuring transparency and fairness in decision-making.

KServe plays a vital role for deploying the trained models to production to realize the business values in enabling the end to end ML lifecycle, including model development, training and pipeline. With the rise of LLMs, the need for scalable and cost-effective serving solutions like KServe has become increasingly evident.

Given the recent incubation of Kubeflow within CNCF, the collaborative efforts with CNCF Cloud Native AI working group as well as the community asks, the KServe community propose transitioning the KServe project from LFAI to CNCF. We are using issue to initiate the voting process.

Thanks! There isn’t going to be much change in terms of governance, but it opens door to many other potential adopters in the cloud native space. kserve was created to build a standard cloud native ml inference platform and we are continuing to commit that by working more closely with cloud native AI community.
